Arab hospitality is legendary and at the heart of this culture is the Majlis – social “sitting spaces” where communities are formed, grown, and nurtured. In this blog post, we will explore the historical significance of the Majlis, their crucial role in Arab culture, and the key facts to consider when designing these spaces.
What does Majlis mean?
The origin of the world comes from pre-Islamic Arabia, where Majlis referred to a council of men from the tribe. These councils were presided over by the Sheikh and were a space to sit and make decisions on topics of common interest. To this day, legislative councils in some states of the Islamic world use the term Majlis.
Why are Majlis important?
Historically, Majlis were tented meeting places where Arabian hospitality was offered ahead of negotiations, forming the setting for business meetings since the Silk Route was established thousands of years ago.
These social spaces are important places for communities to gather – exchanging news, discussing local issues, socialising, and entertaining guests. They are also frequently used for significant life events including wedding receptions and places to pay condolences after a loved one has passed away.
The modern Majlis of today may look visually very different to the Majlis in history, but their functionality, design, and cultural significance has not been diluted by time. Arabs believe teaching the younger generations about the traditions of majlis is now more important than ever – passing down these cultural traditions to children and grandchildren.
What to consider for Majlis interior design?
Majlis are designed to be warm, welcoming spaces that are intended to offer comfort over long periods of time. They should also be calming interiors that encourage an atmosphere of free speech and constructive dialogue amongst attendees.
So, how should we design Majlis, and what are the key things to consider? We’ve put together our top tips for Majlis interior design:
Natural materials. Majlis must be warm, welcome spaces that are pleasant for guests and their hosts alike. Focus on incorporating natural materials like wood, stone, and fabric.
Seating. Majlis are typically large spaces with lots of convivial seating to host any number of guests at once. Consider the number of seats required and, preferably, opt for low seating to allow attendees to fold their legs in comfort.
Aromas. An important aspect of the majlis is the incense burner, also called mabhkara. Fragrances are used to diffuse stale air and make spaces inviting for guests.
Tradition. Majlis are traditionally decorated with beautiful Islamic art pieces as well as beautiful carefully chosen tiles, geometric patterns, calligraphy, and Arabic-inspired furniture. Additionally, consider what Majlis should not contain – for example, televisions and modern gadgets are discouraged as they are a distraction from the community ethos of the space.
Focal point. Majlis typically have a “focal point” of the room, anchoring the interior to create a sense of balance and harmony. This may be a fireplace, water fountain, or a large piece of artwork.
Majlis are more than just a room in a house – they are the essence of Arab hospitality and represent a deep love of community.
